National Borders and Emerging Threats
Abstract
This project aims to investigate how traditional and emerging actors interact in the Border band, which is understood as a dynamic region of contact between peoples, nationalities and regional and global interests. Thus, the project on screen, with a multidisciplinary nature, presents and develops concepts from History, International Relations and Law for the treatment and study of contemporary phenomena in Latin America and their connections, structures, dynamics and legal aspects related to the performance of the Armed Forces in border areas. The upsurge of terrorism on the global stage has posed new challenges to international law, which still faces great difficulty in acting outside of a state-centric view. In this sense, the project intends to analyze the absence of specific legislation in Brazil and the impact of this on the organization and performance of the Armed Forces, as well as the legal frameworks that delimit the performance of different agents on the border. Finally, the research intends to analyze the socio-environmental characteristics, especially of the Amazonian frontier, discussing the relationship between environmental issues and their impact on national defence. Methodologically, the project makes use of prospective research in secondary sources and later with the production and survey of primary data, in archives and/or fieldwork. Thus building a field of dialogue with the research line of Peace and War Studies and the Defence area.
